interview with Steve Leroy !!

1. So how did it all begin?
The Year was 2000, The first year of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. (D.E.M.F.). Friends and I attended briefly and had a blast in doing so. That’s when I really starting to dive into music. It wasn’t until the following year that I seen Kevin Saunderson perform at the same festival that it really sank in and seemed to become an imprint on who I am.

2. Where do you live?
I will always call home base Detroit. But at the moment I am kind of all over the place. Right now I am in Northern Michigan living near Lake Michigan concentrating on the creation of new music concepts and the growth of my new label Deep Cover. I still travel quite a bit, but this is home for the time being.

3.  Where did the name come from?
I knew I wanted to start a label, began brainstorming names. Knew some topics, concepts, ideas, but for the life of me I couldn’t come up with name. So I just worked out the plan, then one day the name just popped into my head.

4.  Which other countries have you played/put parties on
Just the USA so far. I have been asked to play in Europe several times over of the past couple of years and recently two requests in Mexico. I have been concentrating more or less in the United States the last few years. I’m shooting for 2014 to be the year for more international travel. I’m already planning a trip mid summer to Europe for next year.

5. What's the best event you've played at/put on?

Oddly enough. Marquette Michigan… I performed there about 7-8 years ago which was basically a random booking at an art gallery downtown Marquette. The night was insane. Showed up early to check out the venue, Left to get beers because the gallery didn’t serve. Just a stage with like 12 or more subs build into the front of it (LOUD AS SHIT!), simple DJ set up with a serious monitors setup, and a swollen room of about 400-500 people. The sweat was dripping off the walls and even the cops couldn’t shut us down when they showed up. The vibe was so incredible.

6. What was your first record you bought?
Oh man, I have no idea anymore. I used to spend 2-3 days in Detroit and Ann Arbor record stores buying vinyl. I will say that in the beginning I was extremely influenced by the sounds coming out of Detroit.
Labels like PLUS 8, Ghostly, KMS, Transmat, Kompakt, Motech, Intec, and UR, lined my record crate. so I bought a lot of those records. Hunted them down even.

7. Out of all the tunes you have, which one 'never fails?'
There’s always new stuff I’m finding out about so that’s hard to say. I guess it really depends on the night and crowd. I play somewhere between, house and techno so if it’s a smaller room I might play something deep and sexy like Hot Since 82 – Like You, if the rooms a bit bigger I might play something a bit heavier like D.Ramirez – Won’t Give up, or maybe ill feel like getting a bit classic I’ll dig in and get some Marshall Jefferson – Move Your Body or Adonis - No Way Back, Maybe even some Detroit Classics like Inner City’s - Good Life, depends on the night and people and mood.

8. What's your favorite tune of all time?
Fav tune… hell I dunno. My favorite is whatever I really like at the moment. Although Digging deep like that makes me remember an old Plus 8 Record, Cybersonik – Technarchy. Serious track right there! I can still remember the first time I heard that track.

9. So how is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
I think it’s a double edge sword. Back in the day it was all about the underground. Now everything is so commercial that it hurts some times. At the same time, those young kids getting interested music now seem to eventually finding their way to underground events. Some Stay, Some Don’t, Some rage and throw up in the bathroom and Some grow and enjoy music.

10. What are your feelings on the MC's?
MC’s ehh. Not really my thing. Back in the day in Detroit there were a few drum and bass djs and MC collabs that were pretty cool to see.        I did see Skream and Benga Last year at Lollapalooza in Chicago though, that crowd was pretty intense.

12. What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Producers?
Don’t be a DICK. No Seriously, Don’t be a Dick. Far too many newer DJ’s and Producers do that shit, it’s just gotta go. People don’t like that shit. You never know who’s standing around you when you’re being a douche.

13. What do you think of sohblog?
