LUCKY CHARMES – THE BIOGRAPHY
"I DON'T USE A DIFFERENT NAME FOR DIFFERENT STYLES OF HOUSE MUSIC, I'M LUCKY CHARMES AND I LIKE IT ALL!!"
Put Lucky Charmes behind any turntable at any given time and he will display just how a DJ should rock the crowd and what music is all about. Lucky's sound is a strong mix of funky house, grooves, sexy latin, uplifting tech house sounds, massive beats, eclectic vibes and tough African drums. His music and his DJ sets show a strong resemblance: filled with diversity, highly dynamic and always up tempo… Meet Lucky Charmes!
Born on the 16th of June 1979 as Werner Charmes, Lucky grew up in an environment having diversity written all over it. With both Indonesian and Surinam blood running through his veins, Lucky was raised in a house filled with a range of music as wide as the smile on Mick Jagger’s face. Lucky’s first serious attempt in music was when he started to play the drums, a skill he subconsciously had a talent for. Playing the drums laid the foundation for his love for rhythm and beats and, later on, turned out to be a solid basis for his future career as a DJ. At the age of fourteen, Lucky discovered his dad’s old turntables, dusted these bad boys off and started spinning old school records, developing his DJ techniques in the very attic where he found them.
Working the turntables and practicing day after day led Lucky to his very first DJ battle contest, to end up competing in the finals and even winning it. For Lucky, it became evident that a hobby had turned into a passion, with the next step being turning this passion into a career. Lucky joined the hip-hop oriented radio show “The Soundcheck” - a great way for young talents to expose their skills to a big audience - and Lucky was soon invited to join other shows and even host showcases at big events like the “Megafestatie”. After that, Lucky hosted workshops on Dutch Veronica television and worked as an IDP/DMC instructor between 2002 and 2004. His affiliation with and love for teaching others how to spin the wheels is something he still demonstrates up to this day at Studio West in Amsterdam (www.studiowest.nl).
Initially starting out as a hip-hop DJ, Lucky’s career as a club DJ rapidly blew up as he gradually found his way to the house/club scene by obtaining the chance to play in a string of renowned Dutch clubs. With DJ sets in well-known venues such as Now&Wow (Rotterdam), Jimmy Woo (Amsterdam), The Sand (Amsterdam) and Escape (Amsterdam), Lucky’s growing reputation was not to be stopped. As a consequence, Lucky was asked to compile and mix the compilation “Supa Fly House Music”, released in 2002, marking his first DJ mix on CD with more to follow the years after.
Within a few months, he transformed from a fanatic hobbyist into a respected club DJ, hosting his own night Zu Hause at the famous Jimmy Woo club in Amsterdam bringing culture, art and music together in a packed room. Nowadays, Lucky performs his energetic DJ sets on the biggest events and festivals such as Emporium Festival, Pleasure Island, Sexy Mother Fucker, F*ckers, Samsobeats, Sneakerz, Latin Village and many more high profile events.
However, home base The Netherlands was not the only soil where Lucky’s sounds were well received. With gigs in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, Spain, Portugal and many other countries, Lucky soon gained recognition all over Europe. Nowadays Lucky can be found in countless line-ups on the biggest festivals and in prolific venues next to big names like Chuckie, Erick E, Gregor Salto, Sidney Samson, Roog, Benny Rodrigues and Don Diablo. In addition to serving the floors with his unmistakable trademark beat driven sounds, Lucky started two brand new labels: Get Lucky Recordings and Filthy House Music.
As a producer, Lucky also knows how to stand his ground: “Getcha Damn Hands Up” (Sneakerz Muzik), co-produced by Tony Verdult, reached # 1 in the Dance Tunes Top 100 chart and # 8 in the Beatport charts receiving tremendous support from DJ's such as Bob Sinclar, Erick E, Fedde Le Grand and Roger Sanchez. Follow up releases “So High” and “Plain Dots”, again a collaboration with Tony Verdult and both released on Sidney Samson’s imprint Samsobeats, also skyrocketed through the charts and can count on frequent plays from the likes of Axwell, Sidney Samson and Gregor Salto.
Driven by the success of its predecessors, Lucky Charmes and Tony Verdult unleashed “Body Sweat”, a track which was initially offered to Chuckie to be included on his “Pacha Ibiza Anthems” compilation. As the track appealed that much to Chuckie, the Dirty Dutch captain decided to sign “Body Sweat” for a full release on his Dirty Dutch Music. Meanwhile, the international music industry snapped up Lucky by rewarding him with multiple releases on Chris Kaeser’s D-Tracks (France), Robbins Entertainment (USA), Tiger Records (Germany), Selekted Music (The Netherlands), NEWS Records (The Netherlands) and Spinnin Records (The Netherlands). All kudos to Lucky as this acknowledges the fact he’s riding with the big boys now.
Lucky’s fine craftsmanship in the studio didn’t pass by unnoticed in the global music scene and soon resulted into a number of high end remix jobs. Renowned artists like Robin S, John Dahlbäck, AnnaGrace, Sherry Flavour, DJ Jean, D-Rashid, Natural Born Grooves, Groovenatics and Hitmeister D amongst others all experienced a taste of Lucky’s expertise. Now exclusively signed to Selekted Music in The Netherlands, Lucky showcases his diversity on the label in an impressive résumé of tunes such as "Morninglight”, “Rastafari", "Dance With Me", “Invasion 2010” and “Elastik”. But his finest hour was yet to come….
Teaming up with Dutch MC Perry Mystique and the UK songstress Natalie May, Lucky Charmes churned out an amazing fusion of pumping house and street-wise urban in his latest offering "Get Outta That Corner", which definitely marks his finest work to date. Due for global release on international labels in April 2011 and complimented with a slick video, this single already earned multiple plays on BBC Radio 1, Radio 538, FunX Radio, Decibel Radio and many more broadcasters, with impressive chart positions to show for as well.
With finding his comfort in the progressive/bigroom zone, Lucky Charmes is making serious waves in the global music industry. With a heavy recording contract for singles and albums at All Around The World / Universal Records UK in his back pocket, Lucky will be unleashing a ton of dance floor massacre over the coming months featuring some of the world’s biggest vocalists, topliners and singer/songwriters.
Anticipating on his numerous festival gigs during the summer of 2012, Lucky Charmes mixed a 90 minute mixtape giving you a sneak peak of what to expect when undergoing a Lucky Charmes DJ sets.
