It's become very hard to make money by releasing songs in the house scene, which is one of the reasons that many producers turn to making freebies instead. Why? Because having lots of exposure/plays, and thereby many followers, is what lands you gigs around the world - and this is the only way to make a decent income, unless you're a big star already.
To make ends meet I work part time in a low income job, and this and my music studies fills up most of my calendar week. Therefore I don't have nearly as much time to produce music as I'd like to!
