NYC based DJ & Producer HÔHME has been busy over the last few years. His quality list of radio/club residencies continue to grow, his widely popular quarterly mixes (one landing him a feature in DJ Mag) continue to please, and his recent original productions have consistently risen to the top of the Hype Machine popular chart.
1 So how did it all begin?
I started out just putting together playlists for college parties and after watching a bunch of DJs like AM, Stonerokk, and Spyder out in Hollywood, decided to try it out. Bought some equipment and started teaching myself about 6 years ago. Shortly after I started putting out mixes, but it wasn't until I moved to NY about 4 years ago when I actually began Djing professionally.
2 Where do you live?
Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
3 Where did the name come from?
There's a few reasons behind the name. First off, I play and produce house music, so hohme as in home. Second, I want my music to induce a feeling in my listeners of home; that comfortable feeling of being at home and at peace. and Third, the ohm in the middle, representing for me presence; living in the present, not being affected by regret of the past or anxiety of the future.
4 Which other countries have you played/put parties on
The only other country I've played in is Canada, but I've played all over the US; Georgia, Florida, California, Oregon, Massachusetts, NJ, NY, Nevada, Arizona, and a few more that I can't remember at the moment.
5 What's the best event you've played at/put on?
My favorite place I've played is definitely the Burning Man Festival, although it really seems that my best events just keep replacing each other. I'm constantly thinking, wow, that may have been the best show I've ever played.
6 What was your first record you bought?
ahaha, I think totally crossed out by kris kross or dig your own hole by the chemical brothers.
7 Out of all the tunes you have, which one 'never fails?'
I've got a bunch of tracks that are staples to my sets, in that I don't feel they ever really fail but if I were to pick one, it would probably be Chew fu's remix of use somebody by kings of leon. I can still play it to this day and the crowd will go nuts.
8 What's you favourite tune of all time?
No way for me to answer that. I have wayyyy too many favorite songs. Favorite album of all time though is definitely Kings of Convenience - Riot on an Empty Street
9 So how is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
It's changed quite a bit since I started...moving from open-format dominating the clubs to EDM/producer Djs pretty much taking over the scene....and by scene, I mean the best bookings and the best clubs. The DJ market is flooded, but the best ones still continue to rise to the top, so I don't worry at all about competition with other djs.
10 What are your feelings on the MC's?
I don't ever really have an MC, so I don't have much of a feeling about them. I like the music to speak for itself though, I'm not crazy about someone yelling over top of what I'm playing...that's also why I rarely use a mic in my sets.
11 What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Producers?
Be patient, wait to release tracks/mixes that are top quality. Quality content is really the name of the game and if you're releasing anything below average, it just simply won't get any attention these days and neither will you as a DJ/Producer. Keep practicing.
